PortCon: Ignition Fund recipient creating innovative solution for the cruise industry
PortCon is a web-based application designed to streamline cruise itinerary planning and port operations. It provides real-time access to berth availability, ship scheduling, and operational data, reducing inefficiencies in the cruise planning process. By integrating port, ship, and booking information into a single platform, PortCon enables cruise itinerary planners to coordinate seamlessly with multiple ports, eliminating the need for time-consuming emails and phone calls.

PortCon is jointly owned by the Charlottetown Harbour Authority, led by CEO Mike Cochrane, and Harbourside Engineering Consultants, represented by professional engineers Greg MacDonald and Ron Keefe, and in-house developer Joel MacDougald. As PortCon progressed from a proof of concept to a scalable solution, the team sought funding opportunities to support further development and market expansion. “The team became aware of the Ignition Fund through local business networks, industry connections, and economic development resources in PEI,” said Ron Keefe, “The Ignition Fund stood out as an ideal opportunity to help accelerate PortCon’s growth.”
After completing the Ignition Fund application, Ron and the PortCon team were successful in moving on to the next phase of the process: the pitch. As part of the Ignition Fund process, Innovation PEI organizes pitch training for finalists to help them prepare for Pitch Day. “One of the most valuable aspects of the Ignition Fund application process was the pitch training provided,” said Ron, “It helped refine how we communicate our value proposition, ensuring we clearly and effectively convey the problem we are solving, our market opportunity, and our competitive advantage.” Ron also noted that the process strengthened the team’s confidence in presenting their business and highlighted key areas where they could sharpen their messaging and maximize their impact.

PortCon offers an interactive, visual interface for port operators to manage berthing, mooring, gangway configurations, and shore power connections, ensuring efficient and safe cruise operations.
“Our experience [with the Ignition Fund] has been outstanding, providing us with invaluable insights along the way. This initiative is a great reflection of the province’s strong commitment to fostering small businesses.”
With the province’s supportive ecosystem for startups, access to industry experts, along with funding opportunities like the Ignition Fund, PortCon has the foundation to grow and thrive in Prince Edward Island. PortCon was initially developed for Port Charlottetown, serving as a successful proof of concept. The strong local industry connections provide a foundation for expanding the platform to other cruise regions. “Prince Edward Island is part of the Cruise Canada New England (CCNE) region,” Ron said, “It’s an ideal location to develop and refine a solution tailored to the needs of cruise itinerary planners and port operators.” Ron also noted that PEI’s cost of doing business compared to larger urban centres allows for PortCon to develop and scale while leveraging local talent.
When asked what his best advice would be for aspiring entrepreneurs, Ron said, “Start early. If you’re new to entrepreneurship, Innovation PEI offers a wealth of knowledge and valuable resources to support your journey. Their team is highly supportive and eager to help.”
